The Adnams Artist of the Month for March, is truly, “Adnams” pick, because this month the choice is made by Jonathan Adnams who’s family has been brewing in Southwold since 1872.
Almost 140 years of family involvement and yet the man at the helm is totally alert to opportunities and new ways of working.
The brewery (right) has become such an integral part of Southwold over the years and is becoming a tourist destination in its’ own right. Pete Cogle and I can heartily recommend the brewery tour.
Superglue – Heifervescent (Southport, UK)
I played Heifervescent’s excellent Deep Sea Diver on SnC 262 This track is taken from his album The Glue Factory which is also available on Jamendo.
Heifervescent is the never ending, ongoing, infinite, perpetual, and all those other words that mean a seemingly long time, music project of Andy Doran. Starting way back in the 90s, Andy was singer/guitarist with alternative rock band Monkeyland for about 6 years, followed by a spell of mixed media experiments, then the band called Cannula for about a year or two, and finally a solo project under the name of Heifervescent, from which there are currently four albums of material.The Heifervescent music is downloadable under the Creative Commons license.

La Rupture – David (Vallauris, France)
David has been popping up on a whole load of Jemendo artists’ albums across a diversity of genres, but I can’t really tell you any more. Take a look at his myspace and his page on Jamendo and see if you can pick any more bones out of it.

Playing for change
Another very appealing, very straightforward video from Playing for Change, this time featuring Clarence Bekker. The video has been in the PFC archives for a while but a studio album is on the way. Also coming soon is a second compilation album from PFC called … PFC2.

Coney Island – Beast Make Bomb (NYC, USA)
From their new EP Sourpuss which follows up their critically acclaimed freshman effort. BEAST MAKE BOMB describes themselves as “a marriage between punk attitude and pop sensibility”. Their live shows convey these thoughts exactly. They play tightly knit punk songs with the perfect amount of messy rock exploration, catchy guitar riffs, and melodic female vocals. “Coney Island” off their new EP, is reminiscent of Camera Obscura’s early work.
BEAST MAKE BOMB came out victorious over 1000 other bands entered in Converse’s “Get Out of the Garage” competition earning themselves a spot at the Rolling Stone SXSW showcase.

Breaking the Waves – Dikta (Garðabær, Iceland)
“Dikta has been our creative outlet for 12 years, we’ve been a band since high school, friends since kindergarten… music is a shared passion for all of us so it just made sense to do it together.” Starting in a garage in Garðabær, Iceland, and inspired by bands like Radiohead, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, Haukur, Jón, Skúli, and Nonni released their first album, Andartak, in 2002 under their own label, Mistak Records. Andartak’s singles topped Icelandic charts and were constantly played on Iceland’s rock stations.
Dikta, an Icelandic verb meaning “to compose or make something up,” remains immersed in the same passionate and soulful atmosphere it was formed in, inspiring their melodic alternative rock sound. They followed up with their first English language album, Hunting for Happiness, in 2005, expanding their European audience. Dikta filled every venue and played every festival in Iceland and opened for The Kooks during their 2010 European tour before releasing their third album, Get it Together, through their recent union with German record label Smarten Up.

Live Music in UK
The UK music industry (March 7th) welcomes Government support for Lord Clement-Jones’ live music bill, following its second reading in the House of Lords on Friday March 4th.
The private members bill seeks to exempt small venues from the need to obtain a licence for the performance of live music. It will now advance to Committee stage in the Lords.
Commenting on the bill’s passage, Feargal Sharkey, CEO UK Music said: “Not for the first time, I think the entire music industry will want to show its gratitude to Lord Clement-Jones for his perseverance and support. Cutting red tape around the performance of small-scale live music will have a major impact on the careers of fledgling artists and jobbing musicians.
“With Government now openly supporting the common sense measures in this Bill, there is growing confidence that we can move quickly forward to unshackle and promote one of this country’s greatest and most identifiable assets.”

The Day After the Night Before – Nick Tann (Eastleigh, Hampshire, UK)
British singer/songwriter originally from London, but now based in Eastleigh, Hampshire, Nick is an integral member of the music community of Southampton and the surrounding area. As well as regular local BBC radio play he has also performed live sessions on BBC Radio Solent and BBC Southern counties covering most of the south coast.
Nick is also a music podcaster and a fellow member of AMP. Just a brief trumpet blow for good old Nick!
I have been trying to raise the funds to record and press a vinyl album, if you didn’t well I am.
I have completed the first phase of this project by recording the album live a few weeks ago.
Now I am looking for more funds to press and print it.
Everyone who pre orders the album will get their name mentioned on the credits, a free cd and access to a private password protected webpage where they can also download the album.

Adnams Artist of the Month for March
Lelia Broussard was chosen by Adnams Chairman, Jonathan Adnams.

Alone on a Train – Lelia Broussard (Los Angeles, CA, USA)
A worthy winner of the Adnams Artist of the Month. I played that track a few weeks ago and another, quite different track, Satellite, also from the Masquerade album on SnC 238 back in September.
Acclaimed LA-based songwriter Lelia Broussard, originally from the bayous of South Louisiana, unleash ed her third full-length release, ‘MASQUERADE’ (November 2nd 2010, Self-Release). With masterful production by Dan Romer (Ingrid Michaelson, Jenny Owen Youngs), the album boasts an intriguing collection of driving folk/pop gems.

Cushions – Tommy and The Fallen Horses (Wellington, New Zealand)
Lead singer Tommy Benefield rose to infamy around the New Zealand music scene with his group TOMMY headlining many festivals and having several singles on high rotation on a number of radio stations in the country.
After the band split up, the remaining replacement members formed Tommy & The Fallen Horses. Two keyboard players, and two bass players later, their debut album Isolation Is The New Party was completed and has since gone on to receive critical acclaim along with major radio play and TV exposure, resulting in them recently breaking into the New Zealand Indie charts.
Tommy tours relentlessly both with the full band and as a duet with his ridiculously articulate 19-year-old side kick, the bands lead guitarist, Finn Johansson.
Tommy and Finn are off to seek their fame and fortune in America and Europe in 2011.
