SnC 221 – Wed 26 May 2010

Fine music from London and Birmingham here in the UK, as well as Sweden, Israel, Chicago and Vancouver. Perhaps a bit of a summery feel because we just had our summer, last weekend. It’s back to normal now.
The hop that is growing up the barn steps put on 8 inches in the past 24 hours. I’ll be able to give Adnams a run for their money soon.

25 years – Rude City Riot (Vancouver, BC, Canada)
RCR is a “POWER-SKA” BAND from Vancouver BC working overtime to bring you great original songs with powerful vocals & big juicy melodic hooks. If you see us live, you will remember the guitar solos & horn riffs the next day. We are 100% Power-Ska.

Shame – Magic Slim ands the Teardrops (Chicago, IL, USA)
Magic Slim is a great proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rock ‘n’ rockers. Magic Slim and Blind Pig Records celebrate their twenty year collaboration with the release of Raising The Bar, an outstanding collection of R&B gems and perennial crowd favorites culled from Slim’s vast repertoire.

Don’t make a sound – Jon Spanyol (London, UK)
Originally from Malvern, Worcestershire where the last big musical name to come out of the area ended up on the back of the £20 note, Jon Spanyol is not there yet but is certainly aiming just as high.  Since moving to London to complete a music degree, Jon has performed at a number of established venues in the area such as Café de Paris and The Troubador, either playing his own material or on keys and trombone in a wide range of Jazz ensembles. In 2009, Jon was the proud winner of the slightly dubiously named Broadjam “Get Lubed” songwriting contest, for his song ‘Hyperactive Hypochondriac’.

IPO is this weekend in Liverpool, I’ll be heading up there on a fascinating sequence of trains and looking forward to seeing a few of my podcasting chums along with some music that I’ve not heard before. There may even be time for a drink at the wonderfully opulent Philharmonic Dining Rooms (The Phil) where I vaguely remember drinking with some of Liverpool’s finest.
