Music this week from Ontario, Holland, Shanghai, Paris and Vannes in France and Spain.
Spain is quite close to my heart this week as I had to turn down an invitation to the 2010 opening party at Savannah in Ibiza (see Jessie’s rather fine deliberately pixelated picture) because flights from the UK are few and far between right now.
This afternoon, an invitation that I’d love to accept, to meet up with a bunch of musicians and media folks, do a few interviews and see friends … but it is in New York – on Tuesday

Needle in the Groove – Brett Caswell (Barrie, Ontario)
Straight from the heart of the suburban wasteland of southern Ontario comes Brett Caswell, an emerging singer songwriter who has set his sights set on breaking your heart, then making you smile. Armed with his backing band, The Marquee Rose, (which contains members of Fox Jaws and other Barrie staples) Caswell will release his first full length album, A New Balance, on May 18th. A New Balance was recorded in a secret location on the outskirts of the Bruce Trail with Mitch C.W. Hall and Marty Kinack (Feist, Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett). The album is the result of many late whiskey-fuelled nights with friends and alone in the studio. Title track A New Balance features lap-steel from Cuff the Duke’s Dale Murray. Caswell has shared stages with the likes of Jeff Healy, The Trews, Bahamas, Zeus, and has a live show worthy of much praise.

Can Man remix – Boo Boo Davis /Mixendorp (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands)
One of a very few remixes (so far) by Dutch blues guitarist, promoter and label proprietor Jan Mittendorp. It’s certainly unusual to hear blues incorporated into remixes. I think it brings a fresh new twist to the genre and applaud Jan for trying this new approach to spreading the word about the blues which he does so well through Black and Tan Records.

Shuffle for KM – JPFM Band (Paris, France)
Musicalement

Preface – The Shanghi Restoration Project feat. Di Johnson (USA / China)
The Shanghai Restoration Project (TSRP) draws its creative inspiration from the old 1930s Shanghai jazz bands, an early combination of East and West that’s become an international legend. Produced by Chinese-American Dave Liang, TSRP revives this exotic blend by introducing Eastern instruments and rhythms to the Western sounds of hip-hop and electronica.
Producer Dave Liang was born in Lawrence, Kansas and attended high school in upstate New York, where he was selected as the pianist for the NY All-State Jazz Ensemble.
Track is from the album Story of a City on Undercover Culture Music.

Washboard Wiggles – Jeffrey Lemon (Vannes, France)
From the excellent album Contra-utopia. Jeffrey Lemon does not fall anywhere: from hip hop, dub, drum and bass, the electronica and jazz, he experimented with various sound worlds and machines are a ticket of invitation to the doors of perception.
Often accompanied on stage by MC Nasty, posing texts with a flow of fluid disconcerting, and his drummer Crazy Drummer from the jazz, the electronic and the acoustic blend perfectly to give birth to a new genre: music “Electro-lemon”

Panic – La Olla Express (Sant Joan, Alicante, Spain)
