Every now and again I get a track, an album or a video come in that brings a smile to my face. It really doesn’t matter what the genre is, whether its a cover tune or sometimes, whether it’s even in tune!
Here’s one that I was sent a few weeks ago that I had dismissed because it’s a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song. Not that I have any objection to Mr Springsteen, it’s just that playing covers on the show is fraught with copyright difficulties and expensive potholes to fall into.
The track is by James Dolan who just happens to also be the CEO of Madison Square Garden and the owner of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, and who co-produced the 12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief charity event with Harvey Weinstein.
Well, it turns out he has a band too, called JD & The Straight Shot and it’s comprised of a “Who’s Who” cast of studio musicians. The band laid down their cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac” during an NYC studio session. To be honest it feels more like a jam, but what a joy.
It’s down home, front porch, bluesy rock. Whether or not that’s your fancy, I think you’ll have trouble keeping a smile off your face as we witness the fun and joy of making music together.
