Music from Canada, UK, Venezuela, New York and Ukraine brings refreshment to you from the coast of Suffolk this week.
The Suffolk coast is looking particularly spectacular in it’s characteristically bleak way this week.

Fake – Fake Elegance (Kiev, Ukraine)
Formed in 2005 and having their music described as being Fake Pop that finds access to all corners of the soul, Fake Elegance have been making huge inroads on the Ukrainian music scene.  The band’s single Beautiful Morning has been a top 20 hit on leading Ukrainian radio station Europa Plus and they also finished in the top 3 at the international music contest Empire Of Music which was held in Moscow.  The most significant step in the band’s development has been their collaboration with the famous Ukrainian designer of fashion clothes Anna Sosnovskaya who is renowned for creating unmatched style for bands.  Their image as well as their music and performances has since resulted in regular invites to festivals after their music gained a reputation for stopping raining following an infamous performance at Slavske Rock Fest in 2008 when the rain stopped for their set and started again immediately afterwards…..

Nick Drake documentary film on BBC last week. There is a concert The Songs of Nick Drake: Way to Blue on the BBC watch again service, but only 5 days left to catch it. Presenting their own interpretations of Drake’s songs are Vashti Bunyan, Green Gartside, Lisa Hannigan, Scott Matthews, Teddy Thompson, Krystle Warren, Robyn Hitchcock, Kirsty Almeida and Harper Simon. It is lovely to see Danny Thompson (who played on the first two Nick Drake albums) keeping an eye on proceedings from his double bass in the band.

A new balance – Brett Caswell (Barrie, Ontario)
Straight from the heart of the suburban wasteland of southern Ontario comes Brett Caswell, an emerging singer songwriter who has set his sights set on breaking your heart, then making you smile. Armed with his backing band, The Marquee Rose, (which contains members of Fox Jaws and other Barrie staples) Caswell will release his first full length album, A New Balance, on May 18th. A New Balance was recorded in a secret location on the outskirts of the Bruce Trail with Mitch C.W. Hall and Marty Kinack (Feist, Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett). The album is the result of many late whiskey-fuelled nights with friends and alone in the studio. Title track A New Balance features lap-steel from Cuff the Duke’s Dale Murray. Caswell has shared stages with the likes of Jeff Healy, The Trews, Bahamas, Zeus, and has a live show worthy of much praise

Rabbit Fur Coat – Catgut (UK) It is great to see Catgut making headway with fairly mainstream recognition in the form of a play by Tom Robinson on the BBC a couple of weeks ago. “Born in Norway and raised in NE Scotland and SE England, he has been making what he calls Stealth Pop recordings since 2007” Strange, we’ve been hearing Catgut since September 2006 when I played Milky Bar Kid.

Too much information – FlyinFisch (Caracas, Venezuela, New York, LA, USA)
FlyinFisch’s self-titled debut album was released a couple of days ago and is masterminded by Adrian Fischer. Adrian’s musical training began with classical and jazz piano at age six in Caracas, Venezuela. As a teen he formed several bands and became proficient in playing drums, the basis for his current fascination with layered, syncopation. After completing an electronic music course in Barcelona, Adrian moved to Florida to continue his study of music composition and performance at Rollins College. Then, at the California Institute of the Arts (CALARTS), Adrian focused his studies on electronic, electro-acoustic and acoustic composition, until his graduation in 2005.

Paul McCartney Rejects EMI, Takes Catalog To Indie
It was not the news that a struggling EMI wanted to hear. Yesterday Sir Paul McCarthey revealed that he’d re-release his post-Beatle catalog through indie Concord Music Group. EMI had previously handled almost his 2 dozen albums of McCartney solo and fronting Wings under an exclusive license. The former Beatle worked with Concord on a 2007 album and a 2009 CD/DVD hybrid “Good Evening New York City. “Since the release of ‘Memory Almost Full’ in 2007 I’ve had a good working relationship with Concord and enjoyed our mutual love of music,” McCartney said in a statement. via www.hypebot.com

Raffi’s Song (Bare Bones and Amplification versions) – Chapman (Hastings, UK)
Chapman – The Mr Ballad Trilogy
2010 sees Chapman release three albums simultaneously, which interpret the same 11 songs in three stylistically different ways. The Bare Bones of Mr Ballad has Chapman performing the songs live acoustically in their most embryonic form with no overdubs or studio tricks. The Amplification of Mr Ballad is a much larger and more ambitious production, showcasing his unique vocal, drawing on soul, folk and pop influences using strings and brass to full effect. The third album is dance floor friendly, The Remix of Mr Ballad where the 11 tracks are remixed by his producer alter ego OneFourForty. Mr. Ballad is a nickname coined by Chapman’s MySpace fans. A journey where Crosby Stills and Nash meets The Rotary Connection through Balearic, Italo and Afro Beats to stripped down acoustic songs with just voice and guitar.
