SnC 268 – Suffolk ‘ n ‘ Warm

With the top music bars of Ibiza opening by the day (Mint Lounge opened last week with Savannah set for the big green button next Friday) the summer seems to be almost here.
Having said that, it has actually been almost 10 degrees celsius warmer in Suffolk that in Mediterranean islands of Mallorca and Ibiza over the past couple of days.
I was in Southwold yesterday to collect a cask of Adnams Royal Wedding Ale … yes, I put all my non-royalist principles on hold for an hour as, indeed, I shall do again over the weekend 😉 Thanks to them for the “tester”.
There were loads of people on the beach and a remarkable light out to sea. Quite beautiful.

You Put A Smell On Me (Photocall Remix) – Matthew Dear (New York, USA)
Depending on who you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for the Fabric mix series and Get Physical’s Body Language. Sad Again – Greg Dember (Seattle, WA, USA)
I was sent this track by Kara at Sarathan Records and it immediately intrigued me. The interesting and perhaps slightly demanding rhythms, instrument combinations and intricate interactions make for a thoroughly rewarding close listen. Yes, that means it takes a bit of effort to to get the most out of his music. Fortunately and there is lots there so the effort is thoroughly rewarded.
“When I began recording my new ten-song record, Water Makes Waves, only one song,”How We Met,” was already written. All of the rest I composed as I went through the recording process, often arriving in the studio with musical structures worked out, but lyrics only partially written. Working this way, under time pressure, freed me creatively to access unexpected emotional voices.
“The sound is similar to previous efforts of mine, with lots of piano, strings, horns, organ and a few synths, here and there. The album features engineering and lots of guitar and bass by Matthew Brown (Trespassers William) and backing vocals by Anna-Lynne Williams (Trespassers William) and Linda Ceriello. Also, many thanks to drummer Moises Padilla, cellists Kaia Chessen and Anne Brewster, violinist Thorn Michaels and Trumpet/ Clarinetist Aham Oluo. I hope you enjoy the fruits of our collaboration as much as I do.
The lovely folks at Sarathan have made this track available as a free download for SnC listeners and  their friends you can download it at: http://sarathanonlineservices.com/gregdember/

Keep on struggle – Dadub (Berlin, Germany)
From the Berlin-based Italian duo Dadub which comprises Daniele Antezza & Giovanni Conti who produced, arranged, dubbed and mixed the track with the voice of Stefano Fusillo and melodica input from Ivan Antezza.
The project was originally set up in 2008, in Murgia (South Italy) by Daniele Antezza, debuting on the label Aquietbump with a collection of electronic dub songs revolving around mid-tempo pace. In 2009 he moved to Berlin, and joined by Giovanni Conti they transformed Dadub into a duo, shifting the musical direction from pure dub into more experimental territories
“the second release among our sounds.
A deep journey inside dilated sub frequencies and heartbeats.
Astonishing conscious.”
It’s on an EP called Backward Forward which was released just yesterday ob A Quiet Bump as AQB028. You are welcome to download it free under a Creative Commons license at www.aquietbump.com/aqbmp028.html
Besides Dadub project, Daniele and Giovanni established a mastering and audio post- production studio, Artefacts Mastering, forging the sound of several european record labels: Stroboscopic Artefacts, Parquet, Meerestief, Lineal and many others. The duo is actually working on new tracks to be released in the upcoming months, and will tour Europe in the next months.

New York City – Teddy Goldstein and the Goldsteins (Brooklyn, NY, USA)
I suppose the idea that it is the place you live that is the problem is what motivates people to keep going on holidays/vacations. We all dream that we’ll “get away from it all” when in reality the thing we most want to get away from is … ourselves.
Born and raised outside of Philadelphia, PA. (Haverford, Bryn Mawr), singer/songwriter Teddy Goldstein got his start in music by mostly performing for friends and family. “My first gig was at my brothers Bar Mitzvah when I was 3 years old. I did a cover version of Jim Croces Bad Bad Leroy Brown and the place went nuts.
In May of 2010 Teddy is releasing his first album under his bands name, Teddy Goldstein and The Goldsteins titled, Alright Is The New Fantastic. “It’s good to have the band back together with many of the original members. It’s hard to say if we’ll tour – I think everyone right now is just hoping that the band does not break up.” The songs Fully and Not The Real Thing have been licensed for the upcoming film, Café – starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jaime Kennedy.

Boots – Calm Paradox (Utah, USA)
While many 20-year-olds are still contemplating majors, Michelle Kennedy has made the most of her short years: She has a Philosophy degree, her own record label, and a debut album through her musical ventures as Calm Paradox.
Michelle Kennedy was a harpist and classically trained vocalist before a random internet search changed her life forever: She stumbled upon The Strokes’ debut album Is This It and fell violently in love with indie rock. So out went the harp and in came the guitar. That was 2005.
A native of Houston, Texas, Michelle Kennedy moved to Utah in 2008 where she began performing at open mic nights and small acoustic shows. She launched her label in summer 2010 and started recruiting friends to back her up as the Calm Paradox. But plans fell through, and Michelle started law school shortly thereafter. Instead, Michelle headed into the studio solo to realize the loud and brash record she had been envisioning. That was November 2010.
Nearly 10 years after The Strokes made their historic debut, Calm Paradox is now emerging with How to Mind.
