SnC 258 – Packed full of musical goodness

A packed Suffolk ‘n’ Cool show this week with tracks from the USA and Canada. That’s not deliberate, just the way it goes. Southwold here on the Suffolk coast called we’ve had a few days of winds strong enough to whip a few tiles off the barn, so the sea was churned up, full of sand and an interesting colour!

Leaving on the 5th – Voxhaul Broadcast (Los Angeles, CA, USA)
Great things take time and VOXHAUL BROADCAST is set to release their long-awaited debut full-length, Timing Is Everything on March 22, 2011
Timing Is Everything covers a range of emotions, tempos and tales, but a final theme develops.  Singer/guitarist David Dennis says, “There was no specific message I had in mind when I started writing this album, but I think by the end, one of the main themes that carried through a lot of the songs was finding whatever gets you free and letting it take over.”
“All of the times I couldn’t have felt more lost, and all of the times I felt I was right where I should be are all a part of finding what that is.”
Voxhaul Broadcast are performing at NOISE POP in San Fran in February w/ Yo La Tengo & Best Coast and were in the first round of accepted artists to showcase at SXSW in 2011.  They’ll be heading out on a run of dates with Wind Up’s Civil Twilight in March before heading to Austin, with touring to continue through the summer.
Playing with everyone from Massive Attack, DJ Sebastian Tellier, and Thievery Corporation to headlining Fashion Week parties, a Rock & Roll Circus and music and film festivals, Voxhaul Broadcast have made waves not only within the music industry.

When the Wolves Go Blind – Twilight Hotel (Austin Texas, USA)
Twilight Hotel is the musical partnership of Brandy Zdan & Dave Quanbury. Together for eight years (and counting) they possess an elusive chemistry and musical style that is dark, moody and rooted in some kind of nostalgic passion for scratchy records and vintage guitar tones. They combine a rock n roll sensibility, compelling song writing, and haunting arrangements while standing comfortably outside your predictable genre box.
In late 2009 Zdan & Quanbury made the trek across the New Mexico/Arizona desert from their new home in Austin, TX to Los Angeles, CA to record their third album “When The Wolves Go Blind”. They holed up in King-size sound labs for 3 days and laid down the album live off the floor.

Paradise Is Not So Bad – Lifeguards ( ? )
Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices are LIFEGUARDS. The two first worked together outside of the GBV realm on the 1999 fan-classic Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Dept, which included “Do Something Real” the anthemic theme to Steven Soderbergh’s film Full Frontal. Their debut release as Lifeguards, Mist King Urth, emerged in 2002 on Pollard’s own Fading Captain Series label to fervent fan approval. In 2010 Pollard and Gillard reconvened for the first time since the end of GBV in 2004 to create the astounding follow up: Waving at the Astronauts.
Gillard wrote and recorded 10 complex and beautiful instrumentals at home then sent the finished compositions off to Pollard who graced the tracks with some of the most unforgettable melodies and strangely poetic lyrics of his career. In May 2010, Pollard recorded his vocals with Gillard and Travis Harrison at Serious Business Music in NYC where drums and overdubs were added and the record was mixed.

Hanged – Holiday Holiday (Brooklyn, New York, USA)
Mastered at Marcata Studios with Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, Titus Andronicus) the 2 songs on this album showcase the bands ability to beautifully combine 60’s nostalgia with the zest of 2011 to produce ‘something that sounds so fresh with pure pop sensibilities but stuck in the void like a lost 8-track recently uncovered in your grandmother’s attic.’ (Zaptown Magazine)
The stunningly presented Vinyl can be purchased through http://senorsmusic.bigcartel.com. Being the social butterflies that they are, the band have set up ‘pay with a tweet’ option for their new release offering a free digital download of AllOneWord to anyone who posts about it. I’ll Wait – The Prids (Portland Oregon, USA)
So The Prids didn’t form their band last year when they met in college, or 6 months ago when they met at a show, and this isn’t their debut release. It’s extremely fair to say The Prids have been around the block a few times.
To keep it short and sweet : David Frederickson (guitars, vocals) and Mistina La Fave (bass, vocals) started their band together over a decade ago in rural Missouri. They released a slew of 7″s,eps, and full lengths. They relocated to several cities before landing in beautiful Portland, OR where they now reside. Also of note is the fact that the two fell in love, were married, were divorced, and yet the band continued on. Maile Arruda (keys) and Lee Zeman (drums) round out The Prids sound.

Camilo (The Magician) – Said the Whale (Vancouver, BC, Canada)
Said The Whale formed in 2007 as a collaboration between songwriters Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft, “nodding at times to the sea shanties of Neutral Milk Hotel and at others to the boat-shoe-gazing of Vampire Weekend” (The National Post). The pair’s debut EP, Taking Abalonia, featured sunny west coast indie pop, with breezy harmonies, shimmering guitars, and lyrical tributes to their home city of Vancouver. In 2008, the album was rereleased as Howe Sounds/Talking Abalonia, featuring seven additional tracks that stretched the band’s stylistic palate to include bubblegum folk (“The Light Is You”), thundering hard rock (“Last Tree Standing”) and gentle ukulele ballads (“The Real of It”).
After several personnel changes, the group settled upon a five-piece line-up that included bassist Peter Carruthers, drummer Spencer Schoening, and keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown. The quintet embarked upon a rigorous touring schedule, crossing Canada numerous times and landing high profile gigs at V-Fest 2008 in Calgary and the nationally televised Canada Day celebration on Parliament Hill.
The band released their follow-up album, Islands Disappear in 2009 on Hidden Pony Records.
Said The Whale have been invited to showcase at SXSW (Austin, TX) and The Great Escape (Brighton, UK) in 2011
