Play

Italy, Norway, France, the UK and a bit of the USA are represented on this week’s show. There is energy in the air with electric violin and harmonica; interesting new artists and a blues man more accustomed to playing alongside The Rolling Stones. Some fascinating music of a genre I don"t normally play and a preview of the new single from an old favourite of Suffolk ‘n’ Cool. IntroHappy – Jimmie Bratcher (Missouri, USA)www.jimmiebratcher.comGoin’ Down – Hell Dorado (Torino, Italy)Formed in the summer of 2006 in Turin, Italy Hell Dorado reunited different elements from local bands.Ste: Lead vocals and bass guitarPaolo: Guitars and backing vocalsTuro: Guitars and backing vocalsYehudi: DrumsRock shades between geometrical rhythms, tension switches and improvised passages. Sometimes pissed off, but always through with their unique features: distorted guitars and catchy tunes. Hell Dorado’s live shows live on stop-&-go’s, crazy hairstyles, alcoholic tendencies and tight rhythms.www.myspace.com/thehelldorado It doesn’t matter – Nick Cook (UK)Yet another batch of tracks from Nick Cook onto the PMN this week. His sound reminds me of all sorts of artists, John Martyn and Nick Drake amongst them, and yet it is quite distinctive and uncommonly expressive. Some great phrasing here.www.nick-cook.com/Mobile – Edgar Gabriel’s StringFusion (Chicago, Illinois, USA)Edgar Gabriel’s StringFusion is an exciting new jazz fusion ensemble from Chicago. With former Cirque du Soleil electric violinist Edgar Gabriel at the helm, this group fuses elements of rock, classical and world music into its intelligent entertaining character. The improvisations of Edgar along with Maurice Houston (Bass), Steve Doyle (Guitar), Kevin O’Connell (Keyboards), Inderjeet Sidhu (Drums/Tabla), Sarah Alexander (Cello) and Michael Levin (Saxophone/Flute/ Clarinet), are combined with elements of jazz, funk, rock, fiddle Indian ragas, and classical music to rival any jam band.www.stringfusion.com/www.myspace.com/edgargabriel39sstringfusionNinetyfive – The Winning Season (Bridgewater, New Jersey, USA)The Winning Season is composed of songs written and performed by Brian Pascoe. Who says, "I do this simply for the fun of it. I love writing music, and even more so sharing it with people. Hopefully you’ll enjoy.?24 Feb 2008     Crossroads *Benefit Show*     Garwood, New Jersey14 Mar 2008     Bucks County Coffee House   Flemington, New Jerseywww.myspace.com/thewinningseasonContact out of the blue from Rache who is volunteering in Colombia with www.redcolombia.orgCold Blooded Man – Sugar Blue (New York, USA)Grammy Award-winning harmonica virtuoso Sugar Blue is one of the foremost electric harpists of the modern era…Blue began his career as a street musician and made his first recordings in 1975 with legendary blues figures Brownie McGhee and Roosevelt Sykes. The following year, he contributed to recordings by Victoria Spivey and Johnny Shines before pulling up stakes and moving to Paris on the advice of pioneer blues pianist Memphis Slim. While in France, Blue hooked up with members of the Rolling Stones, who instantly fell in love with his sound. The Stones invited Blue to join them in the studio. Besides his work on the Some Girls album, he can be heard on Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You. He appeared live with the group on numerous occasions and was offered the session spot indefinitely, but he turned it down, opting instead to return to the States and put his own band together rather than became a full-time sideman. Before returning to the U.S. in 1982, Blue cut a pair of albums, Crossroads and From Paris to Chicago.www.sugar-blue.com/Wear my crown – Poxfil (France)A second track from the amazingly versatile Poxfil in just a couple of weeks – not really the
sort of stuff I normally go for but this has a distinct quality that
cuts through the genre. Thanks to Paul The Grumbler for putting me onto this exceptional track when he played it on mumu (http://mumu.grumbling-dragon.com/) last week.Taken from the Jamendo album Who is on my Sofa? where, for some reason it is referred to as "Were my crow" – almost surreal! The album is a must-download gem. They have a couple more albums which are also available from Jamendo and also well worth a listen.www.jamendo.com/en/album/15656The nun who nurtured reggaeAt lunchtime yesterday I was delighted to be reminded of how great some public-service radio is in the UK. Radio 4, speech-based radio for people with a bit of a brain put out a wonderful gem of a programme in which Jonathon Charles tells the story of Sister Mary Ignatius Davis who ran the music programme at the Alpha Boys’ School in Kingston, Jamaica. Some great reggae and ska music and some some of the greats of the genre and wonderful characters describing a remarkable woman.Give yourself a 28 minute treat while it is still available. Click this very much shortened link to hear the programme on the BBC iPlayerBerwick Road – Dave Lambert Band (Minnesota, USA)I played this track on the show before (show 50 back in January last year) but I had a very simple note from Dave that reminded me give it another well-deserved airing. The Dave Lambert Band has arrived from it’s roots as a driving blues band into one of the Midwest’s finest Roadhouse Remedies. Blistering renditions of 20’s and 30’s blues classics mixed with guitar magic and slide prowess make this one a must have in any blues/rock/guitarist collection.www.davelambertband.comThe path of love – Nordgarden (Hammer, Norway)I’m delighted to have a copy of the new Nordgarden single for you it’s also the title track from his new album to be released in April/May.He has a few dates in the UK in early March when he’s playing Oxford, the Grapevine in Norwich and Glossop. He’s back in May too. Loads of shows in Holland in March.  Dates on his Myspace.www.nordgarden.infowww.myspace.com/nordgarden
