SnC 090 – Wed 07 Nov 2007

A rum ol’ mix of music this week along with a feature on the Lewes Bonfire celebrations in Sussex (not Suffolk!). A long week of travel so "if it’s now it must be Suffolk". Lewes 5 Nov Spent Guy Fawkes / Bonfire night in Lewes with Roy, Gwyneth and Amy
having a hugely enjoyable time living rather dangerously along with
quite a few thousand other people.Info: Nov 5th is the night for
fireworks in the UK, commemorating the unsuccessful attempt by Guy
Fawkes and his fellow conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
In Lewes, it is also mixed up with the execution (a long time ago) of
some local Protestants by the Catholics as part of some inter sect
squabble. Now it is more political and the religious element is
pretty much a charade. The main purpose now seems to be to have a great
time and behave really dangerously. Great.www.pbase.com/diaspora/lewesbonfire0607West End Supermarket – The Above (New York, USA)A lovely trashy archetypically English sound. Direct from New York. The Above are a young, enegetic Brooklyn, NY band whose music is heavily influenced by the British Invasion, as well as the ’60s sounds of Motown, Chess, Stax, Atlantic, and the classic Nuggets compilation.www.myspace.com/newyorkaboveGood to be back – Lima Charlie (Connecticut, USA)Lima Charlie formed in early 2004 and hit the NYC clubs shortly thereafter, performing at venues such as CBGB, Knitting Factory, Tribeca Rock Club, Rothko, Arlene’s Grocery, Lion’s Den, and more, while consistently drawing large crowds. The music is bred from a love of modern artists such as Beck and Sonic Youth.www.limacharliemusic.com/The edge of Tedjhara – Tracy Jane Comer (Wisconsin. USA)I’ve played Tracy Jane before, but not for a while. You may remember Yellow Bike which we heard this time last year. She has just put a few more tracks up on the PMN so now I can play one for you. The voice is distinctive but it seems to have a quite different quality in this song.www.tracyjanecomer.comLike I give a care – You say party, we say die (Vancouver, Canada)I mentioned last week that I’d seen You say Party at Colchester recently and was waiting for an MP3 to arrive. It has and this is it. I also mentioned that the PA at Colchester sounded dreadful. It seems that the Codger heard them OK in Brighton a couple of days earlier so I can only assume that it was my great misfortune to catch the duff venue. This week they are playing gigs in Utrecht, Brussels, Angers and Paris before heading down to Barcelona, over to Italy and back up to Germany before heading back to Canada.www.yousaypartywesaydie.cawww.myspace.com/yousaypartywesaydieCuriosity – Naits (Pennsylvania, USA)Kevin Nalts is a self proclaimed "Viral Video Genius". He moonlights as "Nalts," one of YouTube’s top video creators and one of the top-10 "most subscribed" YouTube comedians. I’m just not sure where the music fits in though!http://willvideoforfood.com/about-nalts/Karola – Remmy Ongala (South Africa)The Great East African Trip includes some of the greatest classic and contemporary hits of East Africa, carefully selected by expert David Makali such as heavyweights like Samba Mapangala from Kenya, Super Mazembe from Congo, Kidum from Burundi and Priscilla & Qute Kaye, from Uganda.www.africancreammusic.com/web/content/view/73/27/Be like the man – Mieka Pauley (Massachusetts, USA)Last week I promised another track from Meika Pauley. This week I’m delighted to deliver that promise with a rather different track. All that and versatility too!www.mieka.comBetrayers Call – King Dubby (France)Another track from King Dubby’s 2006 album First Dubs released through Jamendo which, of course, means that you can go over to Jamendo and download it … for free. The website (below) is pretty empty but his Jamendo pages tell you a bit.http://kingdubby.hautetfort.comwww.jamendo.com/en/artist/king.dubby/Don’t forget all the dub reggae you’ll ever need is at The Dub Zone with Pete Cogle.http://thedubzone.blogsome.com/
