SnC 068 – Wed 06 June 2007

A rash of Suffolk ‘n’ Cool firstplays scattered among this week’s
selection of the finest independent music from Austria, New York,
London, New York, New Jersey and California. The DVD is pretty much done now and the good folks at YMCA Training seem very happy with it. Just a few minor adjustments last night. The nature of project work â¦Wednesday morning – Norwich later to the Winelight and an interview with Alastair Artingstall who is also playing a set at Borders Bookshop at lunchtime.Programme on BBC TV on Sunday evening about Bob Marley in London – didn’t get it. I think trying too hard to be artsy.Eddie – Skeptic Eleptic (Austria)Playing gigs with bands like Vice Squad, Exploited, Marky Ramone, UK. Subs, The Vibrators, The Horrorpops, The Fuzztones, the Epoxies made Skeptic Eleptic improving their excentric Live-Shows, they never leave the audience with no pale faces. Yes, the notes are the same as when I played them a couple of weeks ago!www.skepticeleptic.com/www.myspace.com/skepticelepticAriel publicity – message from Ariel Hyatt at Ariel Publicity I’m surprised that more bands don’t make a little effort to get more publicity.Off the tracks – Charlotte Kendrick (New York)Charlotte Kendrick’s music is tenderly performed Americana folk rock in the vein of Kaplansky, Williams or McLachlan. Her understated voice is in the tradition of folk singers to whom the song matters most, while her lyrics are haunting, triumphant and sobering at the same time.Charlotte is doing quite a few house concerts – not a phenomena that really seems to have taken off in the UK, yet. Charlette described how it works: All you need to do is:1. Provide a common space big enough to fit at least 20 people (on pillows, folding chairs, soft rugs, whatever).2. Invite your friends and family and ask that they make a $10 suggested donation to the artist.3. Provide drinks and/or snacks if you’d like (chips, cheese & crackers, cookies, veggies, etc.).A house concert costs almost nothing to the host; the only out-of-pocket expenses are for the drink and snacks.  The "suggested donations" will take care of us!However, if preferred, the host can provide the concert fee. Whatever works best for the occasion. There’s a great article about house concerts at www.houseconcerts.orgCertainly an interesting approach. You can now buy Charlotte Kendrick’s new CD North of New York at CDBaby.com and from her website. CD Release at the Towne Crier this Friday!www.charlottekendrick.com/www.myspace.com/charlottekendrickHit the road – Mister Frendo (London, UK)London born DJ/producer/turntablist.Mister Frendo is a well known DJ in and around London UK and has been DJ’ing for 15 years, he has also been Producing for the past three years coming up with various projects ranging from HIPHOP/TRIPHOP/ Drum & BASS & FUNKY HOUSE/CHILLED ETC: Frendo also loves his TURNTABLISEM and his main passion for DJ’ing lies with the HIP HOP. With his skills and techniques the music he is making is so diverse & also influenced by all the journey’s to other cultures and countries.14 Jun 2007  20:00 The Grosvenor     South London15 Jun 2007 22:00  The Providence – Brighton25 Jun 2007 20:30  Dublin Castle,  London 28 Jun 2007 20:00  Love Music Hate Racism     Londonwww.myspace.com/mrfrendoGary Korvar of Smallfish Adventures (played Hydraulics a couple of weeks ago)While in the studio this weekend Evan and I listened to the show. Thanks a ton!I have to admit, my timing in announcing the concert could have been better.  We decided somewhat last minute to have the webcast and after getting it all together scarcely had time to alert the world about it.I’ll let you know long before hand next time. Thanks for your show!  Keep on doing what you do.  When I’m running it often brings a smile to my face.Keep fishin’GTKThe Ride – Joan as Policewoman (New York, USA)Joan Wasser – songwriter, singer, guitarist, pianist, violinist, Rainy Orteca – bass,  Ben Perowsky – drums"Joan Wasser is the best champagne in the world. A voice so wonderous and moving that it makes everyone else’s seem ordinary and mundane, the indie generation’s Dusty Springfield. The Ride is the most hypnotic and majestic sad song ever and so good it will make you shiver." With quirky lyrics about hardcore punk moshing and feral feline population, Sarah’s songs draw the attention of her audience. She works the stage with an rhythmic guitar style, a fresh melodic line, and a candid stage presence. Lots of gigs coming up in the New York, New Jersey areas. She graduated Westminster Choir College with a B.A. in Music. In 2000 she picked up a guitar, denied her classical roots, and started rocking out. Her heart lives in New Jersey and Massachusetts, and she wishes Connecticut wasn’t so big. Sarah Donner is also the host and founder of Indie Music Night, an acclaimed monthly series featuring premium live music held in Princeton, NJ. www.myspace.com/indiemusicnight  Her first self produced studio album Reluctant Cat Lady will be released in June 2007, and the masses (of cats) will flock to her doorstep in anticipation. PRE-ORDER Reluctant Cat Lady from her site.www.sarahdonner.com/Met up with Mick Cater band management for years (Robert Palmer, UB40 etc.) at the Café de Paris last week – first time in over 30 years. The Hole –  The Soul of John Black (California, USA)John Bingham’s musical history boasts an impressive resume. He’s written songs for Miles Davis and played percussion in the Davis group. His track "Jilli" is featured on Amandla, the trumpeter’s last studio album. He also appears on the recently released Davis DVD, Live In Paris.Bigham’s latest solo project The Good Girl Blues is a testament to the forceful beauty of music that’s been stripped down to its essence – guitar, voice and naked human emotion delivered in sparse performances that grabs your attention with its raw and spontaneous power. The Hole is the first track.Jun 6    10:00pm    Charleston, SC    The Pour HouseJun 7    10:00pm    Atlanta, GA        The Five Spotwww.thesoulofjohnblack.com/www.myspace.com/thesoulofjohnblack
