SnC 044 – Wed 20 Dec 2006

Winter is suddenly here with its long cold fingers in your ears and up your nose. Suddenly it’s very damp and chilling cold with freezing fog and very short days. In fact tomorrow (21st) is the shorted day of the year. So, all being well, the sun will rise at just after 8 in the morning and set again by a quarter to four. Thre was a spectacular sunset yesterday (right) through the fog the sky just seemed to glow orange red and the village, down in the valley completely disappeared. Altitude makes it warmer.Went to take a look at a friend’s computer and iPod. She has some MP3 CDs that she’d picked up in the far east (no, not Lowestoft) – MP3s taken from the genuine article with no pretence of legitimacy. Even gave the email address of the guy who had ripped the albums! That almost seems honest!Music this week from Texas, New York, Canada, London and a little bit from Turkey. I really wasn’t expecting there to be much good music on the PMN this week but Lo – there is. Including three, (yes Pete Cogle, THREE) cracking tracks that get their first podcast airing as Suffolk’n’Cool first plays.Rotten sugar mound – Spivey (Texas, USA)SPiVEY takes its name from singer/songwriter Ryan Spivey, whose strong melodies, personal lyrics, and rich guitar provide the muscle and soul for the beats and bass backbone laid down by bandmate Josh Boucher.Ryan Spivey – Guitar, Vocals…  Josh Boucher – Bass, Digital Drums, Didgeridoo, Congas, Backing Vocals20 Dec       Gas Light – LUBBOCK22 Dec       ROCKY LARUES – Lubbock, Texas23 Dec       O’Jeda’s –  Plano, Texas27 Dec       Gas Light – LUBBOCK30 Dec       Gas Light – LUBBOCK31 Dec       ROCKY LARUES     Lubbock, Texas12 Jan       ROCKY LARUES     Lubbock, Texas20 Jan       ROCKY LARUES     Lubbock, Texas24 Jan       ROCKY LARUES     Lubbock, Texas27 Jan        Gas Light     LUBBOCKDo check out the band’s MySpace, there are some particularly fine pieces of artwork in the pics section.http://www.spiveymusic.com/http://www.myspace.com/spiveymusicJealous girl – Sarah Dashew (New York, USA)   FIRST PLAYFormer Texan Sarah Dashew grew up sailing around the world, listening to Janis Joplin and Bruce Springsteen…In 2006 she debuted with Jealous Girl, a beautiful first album produced by legendary producer Chuck Plotkin (Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan). Sarah is being hailed as one of LA’s "great new artists". May now be based in New York but it’s difficult to keep up with Sarah!Mon, January 15th ROCKWOOD MUSIC HALL 196 Allen St. (btw. Houston & Stanton). New York, NYwww.rockwoodmusichall.com for more infohttp://www.sarahdashew.com/http://www.myspace.com/sarahdashewZurnai – Ozgur Bulbum (Turkey)  FIRST PLAY A really short track. I could have coped with a bit more.Born May 1976 in Istanbul. After graduation from Kadikoy Anatolian High School he started studying composition at ITU Music College.Having played the keyboard live for Turkish artists such as Tarkan he’s been composing, producing, remixing Turkish Pop Music and commercial jingles as well since 1996.http://www.ozgurbuldum.comI don’t want to talk about love no more – Amy Rigby (New York, USA)Born in Pittsburgh and a long-time resident of New York City, Amy was songwriter, singer and rhythm guitarist for cow punk pioneers Last Roundup and folk pop trio The Shams before her first solo album got the attention of critics and music fans. Four widely critically acclaimed albums later and now making her home in Nashville, Rigby continues to write and sing from the trenches of rock, romance and reality. Praised for her dazzling song craft and brilliant humour and bite, Amy Rigby "gives you everything you could want from rock music: anger, humour, lust, and wistfulness." says the Knoxville Metro Pulse.Amy’s fifth album, Little Fugitive, finds the singer, who began her solo career as the Mod Housewife, bringing it all back home. Hailed for her keen eye and sharp wit in tracing the vagaries and victories of modern romance, her new Signature Sounds release finds Rigby promising "I Don’t Want To Talk About Love No More". But, of course, she does – getting to the heart of the matter and the heart of the punch line in due course.Amy was in the UK earlier this month for a gig with Wreckless Eric and they are doing a short German tour in the first half of February as The Eric and Amy Show. Check Amy’s site for details.http://www.amyrigby.comhttp://www.myspace.com/amyrigbyOne Six RightToday I was fortunate enough to come across the website for the most beautiful documentary aviation film called One Six Right after the name of the famous runway at what has been variously known as LA Metropolitan Airport, Van Nuys Army Airbase and San Fernando Valley Airport. Shot in high definition video it is just totally jaw-droppingly beautiful. Even if you’re not interested in aircraft, take a look. It really is something special. You can see the intro sequence for free in HD at:http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/onesixright.htmlThe movie site is at http://www.onesixright.comSomewhere over Greenland – Peter Greenstone (Texas, USA)Peter Greenstone is an independent musician, a singer/songwriter producing his own sound from his home studio in Austin, Texas. Freely stepping across and often defying genres, Peter mixes acoustic and synthetic sounds and tones to create an atmosphere in his music that is sometimes surreal, sometimes haunting, sometimes whimsical, but always personal.http://web.mac.com/pgreenstone/http://www.myspace.com/pgreenstoneI came across Peter on CC Chapman’s excellent Accident Hash podcast find him at http://www.accidenthash.com/Lucky Day – Stavia (London, UK)Stavia Blunt – singer-songwriter, musician, doctor, raised in Kenya, lives in London. Turbulent life story. Great songs.Stavia Blunt – piano, keyboards, all vocals. Grant Jamieson – guitars. Rob Fergus-Smith / Tony Kiley – drums. MM&ET have spent the last four year touring the country endlessly. In that time the band has moved from opening shows for acts such as Blue Rodeo and Sam Roberts to headlining their own sold-out shows. The group recently took home four awards at the 2006 East Coast Music Awards. This is certainly an artist and band to watch.Matt also has some solo tracks on the PMN which I’ll certainly be playing in the very near future. In fact there was such a lot of great music on the PMN this week that I may have to slip an extra show in. Wed. Dec 20    Jammin’ Java     Vienna, VA     Thu.
