S’n’C 003 – Tue 14th Feb 2006

A bit of a variation for this show and not just because it’s an enhanced podcast. You should see pictures in iTunes (with clickable links) and on the new generation iPod
A Valentine selection of laid back tunes for a lazy Sunday morning – in fact, any Sunday morning would be a good excuse to get into some great music from:
Jimmie Bratcher – Restless for the Sun Jimmie’s 4th CD titled Red was produced by Jim Gaines. Jim has produced such greats as Stevie Ray Vaughn and Carlos Santana. As well as turning out great music from Missouri, in a strong blues tradition, Jimmie is also the Rev. Jimmie Bratcher.

This track reminds me of Jess Roden who I knew when I was at Island Records in the 70s, singing with the likes of Bronco. He succeeded Jim Morrison when the remaining Doors released a couple of albums as the Butts Band (e.g. No Butts About It). An Island album simply called Jess Roden was released with a great version of On Broadway – worth looking out for. Is Jess still singing? I think I last heard that he was in New York.

Kcentric – Woo, who Composer and Alabama based producer Kawaski "KCentric" Nelson carves out a unique musical niche that incorporates jazz, hip-hop, easy listening, and electronica all in one package.

The Elizabeth Lohninger Quartet – Pour-quoi, pour-quoi pas The album "Beneath your surface" is comprised mostly of original compositions and presents a view of European vocal traditions through "jazz colored glasses". German songs are set in contrast to Joni Mitchell’s "Both Sides Now", rounded off with some original odd-meter songs and a dash of French. A great mix of cultures and passions from this New York based artist.

The Lascivious Biddies – Betty New York City’s all-female "cocktail pop" quartet The Lascivious Biddies have earned a reputation for having an energetic and tightly woven live show that sparkles with four-part harmonies, expert musicianship, and magnetic wit. OK, the Biddies are getting lots of podcast plays these days – but that’s probably because they’re really good. I’ll probably slip another track into the next show.

They also have their own podcast, the Biddy Cast which you can find on iTunes or through their site.

Paula Toledo – If you leave me in a hurryPaula Toledo is a real find. There seems to be a really strong seam of Canadian women producing beautiful songs at the moment. I think Paula Toledo is among the best. Melancholy shadowing optimism. Jangly guitars to atmospheric sounds. Paula co-produced this album with Jonathan Anderson, additional prod. & mixing by David Odlum (Josh Ritter, The Frames) at Black Box Studios in France.

Tom Waits – Alice What can one say about Tom Waits that needs saying – nothing that he can’t say much more eloquently just by opening his mouth and letting the sound come out. He has a huge back-catalogue that’s also worth checking. Epitaph Records who have released quite a bit of material to the Podsafe Music Network

Tom Robinson – Listen to the radio From pure pop to politics, Tom Robinson has charted an interesting course through the last 20 years. Songwriter, human rights campaigner and DJ for BBC 6 Music. He has released 12 albums including 5 UK Top 40 hits and these days performs solo, duo, spoken word or with full band.

As usual the music for this week’s show was sourced from the Podsafe Music Network. Great things are afoot in the word of Podsafe music, including an upcoming means for you to buy the music you hear on Suffolk ‘n’ Cool (as pure MP3 downloads) from the artist, through the PMN. I’ll post a note when the system geos live. If you are subscribed, you’ll get it downloaded automatically.
Meanwhile, if you’ve got comments or suggestions for the show, let me know, the email link is in the right margin of this page. Oh, and don’t forget those black holes in Google Earth!
